This week many of our Sikh and Punjabi colleagues are celebrating Vaisakhi, which marks the Sikh new year, the founding of the Khalsa in 1699 and the spring harvest in Punjab. Many gurdwaras hold Nagar Kirtan processions, often on a nearby weekend, and they are usually open to everyone. If you are celebrating and would like some flexibility around your hours, have a word with your manager. Anyone who would like to share what the day means to them is welcome to get in touch at [contact].

Talking points

For managers and team leads.

- Vaisakhi marks the Sikh new year, the founding of the Khalsa and the spring harvest in Punjab. - Be open to requests for leave or flexible hours, including for weekend processions and family gatherings. - Let colleagues choose whether to share how they celebrate rather than asking them to explain it.

Tone note

How to pitch it.

Keep the tone warm and celebratory, and invite rather than presume: some colleagues will want to share, others will prefer not to be singled out. Vaisakhi Mubarak or Happy Vaisakhi are both widely used greetings.

  1. Plan ahead — Add Vaisakhi to your content calendar at least 2 weeks before the date so you have time to gather content and images.
  2. Choose your angle — Will you run a dedicated special edition, or include it as a section in your regular newsletter? Bigger events work well as specials; smaller ones fit into your weekly digest.
