Ramadan begins

Ramadan is the Islamic holy month, when many Muslims fast from dawn to sunset and focus on prayer, reflection and charity. It lasts 29 or 30 days and ends with Eid al-Fitr, with the last ten nights considered especially significant.

Newsletter blurb

Ramadan is beginning, and we'd like to wish Ramadan Mubarak to colleagues who are observing it. During the month, many Muslims fast from dawn to sunset and spend more time in prayer and reflection, often with very early mornings and late evenings. If you're observing, please talk to your manager about flexible hours or moving meeting times. For everyone else, a simple step is to avoid booking important meetings late in the day where you can.

Slack / Teams post

For the company channel on the day.

Ramadan Mubarak to all colleagues observing Ramadan, which begins this week. If flexible hours or different meeting times would help during the month, just let your manager know.

Talking points

For managers and team leads.

- Offer flexibility on working hours and breaks, and be thoughtful about when meetings happen. - Don't ask colleagues to explain their faith or whether they're fasting. - The last ten nights are especially significant, and Eid al-Fitr at the end of the month may bring leave requests.

Tone note

How to pitch it.

Ramadan begins with the sighting of the new moon, so the start date may vary by a day depending on moon sighting and local practice. Keep the focus on faith, reflection and practical flexibility rather than food, and don't put anyone under pressure to explain how they observe it.
